SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
The period 28th July - 3rd August has been characterized by
very unsettled levels of geomagnetic activity. This has resulted in
higher than normal ionospheric absorption levels, particularly for
northern stations, during darkness hours.
The Marconi Research Centre's ionospheric forecast for Europe
has reported poor night time conditions throughout the period and
below normal levels at other times.
Sunspots are continuing to appear on most days, although no
active region is being established. Solar flux levels are almost
steady, at an average of 70 units for the period. The geomagnetic A
index has been unsettled throughout the period, averaging 15 units -
the highest level since last March. The solar wind particle input
has been extremely low over the period.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies averaged 5.6MHz for the period with
variations from 5.1MHz on 31st July up to 6.3MHz on 2nd August. The
daylight levels have held up well considering all other factors.
The darkness hour lows have averaged 2.6MHz with some of the
days being down to 2.2MHz. This has been a drop of 0.5MHz - about
20% - over the past 3 weeks. Together with the present higher
absorption levels this has resulted in a steep decline in darkness
hour conditions.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies have suffered a severe decline both
in daylight and darkness hours. The daytime levels are now down to
the lowest of this cycle - an average of just 4.7MHz.
The darkness hour lows have also declined and averaged 1.9MHz.
Severe spread F has also taken a toll. The F1 and F2 levels have
been difficult to separate at times. The higher magnetic levels have
resulted in considerable absorption during darkness hours. Sporadic
E was reported from South Uist between 06 and 08 hours on 1st
August. Generally, conditions have been well below normal.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
The recent spate of geomagnetic activity is expected to
decline, returning to the "quiet" to "just unsettled" levels.
The solar flux levels are expected to be steady at around 70
units. The ionospheric F2 critical frequencies could well improve
this week, particularly in the north. The F2 critical levels of
about 5.4MHz or MUFs of 16.5MHz could result. In the south, critical
levels of about 6MHz or MUFs of 18MHz are possible.
The darkness hour lows are expected to remain unchanged but
spread F - a breaking up of the F layers which results in increased
fading - will be more evident especially for northern stations.
The Perseids meteor shower will peak at 20 hours on 12th August
and the radiant point will be in the north eastern sky.
The Rotherham and district ARC is running its second 2 metre
contest today (10th August). The contest starts at 0900 GMT and will
end at 1700 GMT.
5 points will be awarded for each contact with multipliers for
each country and for each contact with GJ, GU, GI and EI. DXCC
countries count as 10 points.
Registered club callsigns must be used during the contest. A
trophy will be presented to the winning club, which will be retained
for one year. Details from Steve G1SGB on Rotherham (0709) 540753.
Following a meeting between RSGB and the DTI to discuss
improvements in repeater licensing procedures, a number of VHF
repeater licences have been issued. These are GB3NG on channel R1,
located at Peterhead, Grampian and GB3SA on channel R3, at Swansea.
In addition, the DTI have cleared site changes for GB3EL in
East London and GB3SR on the Sussex coast. The dates when these
repeaters will become operational, or when the site changes take
place, are not yet known but we'll bring you the news as soon as we
have it.
This clears all the outstanding VHF proposals; the UHF and
microwave applications will take longer to clear by the DTI.
GB3CH, the Caradon Hill repeater, on channel RB2, located 25km
north west of Plymouth, will close down at 2pm on 12th August for
engineering and maintenance. It is expected that the repeater will
be back on the air within 8 to 10 days.

David G1IOO on Accrington (0254) 395092.
Last week we reported on a proposed DXpedition to Rockall.
Faced with the transport difficulties and the worsening weather the
organisers have had to cancel their plans. It's understood that
another attempt will be made in August 1987.
The Midland AX25 Packet Radio Group has been recently formed to
promote the benefits of packet radio in the UK.
Known as MAXPAK and based in Wolverhampton, the group is made
up of amateurs who are currently active using the AX25 link level 2
packet data protocol. Its aims are to assist other amateurs in
getting on the air with packet radio and to promote its experimental
features to a wider audience. To this end, the group would be happy
to provide talks and demonstrations on packet radio to clubs within
a reasonable travelling distance. Further details from Andy G1DIL on
Wolverhampton (0902) 743164.
There has been a change in the transmission time for the GB2ATG
RTTY news broadcasts. As from last Sunday (3rd August) the
transmissions from G6AGK near Canterbury and G6KHW near Biggleswade,
both on 144.600MHz, will take place at 12 noon local time.
The Post Office has informed RSGB that the latest callsigns
issued as of Wednesday 6th August were in the G0FK and G1VU series.
SATELLITE NEWS.

not take place last Thursday (7th August). The launch was

listening to the AMSAT-UK nets on 3782kHz in the 80 metre band. The
